The Impact of AI on the Legal Profession: Threat or Opportunity?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a topic of much debate in the legal profession, with conflicting views on whether its benefits outweigh its drawbacks. While AI can automate tasks and process vast amounts of information quickly, concerns about biased data and accuracy remain.

A recent report from the UK’s Law Society predicted a “savage reduction” in legal jobs due to AI, while a study from universities in the US highlighted the legal sector as the most likely to be impacted by AI. Despite these concerns, AI has the potential to revolutionize the legal profession by assisting in research and case preparation.

However, the use of AI in the legal field is not without its challenges. New York lawyer Steven Schwartz faced a court hearing after using an AI system to research legal precedents, only to discover that the AI had fabricated most of the cases. This incident raised questions about the professionalism and ethics of using AI in legal practice.

Despite these challenges, some law firms are embracing AI technology. International law firm Baker McKenzie has set up a team to test new AI systems and is exploring the use of AI-powered legal software providers like LexisNexis and Microsoft’s 365 Solution for Legal. These platforms can answer legal questions, generate documents, and summarize legal issues.

Generative AI, which can create text, images, and music based on training data, is a key focus for many firms. While premium AI tools like Microsoft’s Copilot can be expensive, there are more affordable options available from companies like Google and OpenAI. These tools can be adapted for legal use and integrated into existing systems.

Some firms, like RobinAI, are developing their own AI models trained on specific legal data. By building a database of contracts and training AI systems on this data, firms can improve the accuracy and performance of AI tools. Human oversight is also crucial to ensure the reliability of AI-generated information.

AI is not only impacting law firms but also empowering individuals to access legal services. Tech firm Grapple offers free AI tools to help individuals navigate legal issues, democratizing access to legal information. While AI is not replacing human lawyers, it is enhancing people’s understanding of their legal rights and enabling them to build their own legal cases.

As AI continues to evolve in the legal profession, challenges around ethics, accountability, and regulation will need to be addressed. The use of AI in legal practice is still in its early stages, but as more firms adopt AI technology, the legal landscape is likely to undergo significant changes.
