Simpson Thacher & Bartlett Strengthens Disputes Practice in London with Hire of Partner from Skadden

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has made a significant addition to its disputes practice in London with the hire of David Edwards, a partner from rival firm Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom. Edwards brings with him nine years of experience as a partner at Skadden and a wealth of expertise in high-stakes disputes in English courts, arbitration tribunals, and other forums.

At Simpson Thacher, Edwards will co-lead the European disputes practice alongside London-based partner Tyler Robinson. Alden Millard, chair of Simpson Thacher’s executive committee, expressed excitement about Edwards joining the firm, stating that his track record of success for clients in complex multijurisdictional matters will enhance the firm’s ability to provide strategic advice to clients.

Edwards’ practice focuses on a range of disputes, including shareholder disputes, tax litigation, insurance-related matters, and regulatory concerns. He has represented major global companies, financial institutions, sponsors, and ultra-high-net-worth individuals. Some of his notable work at Skadden includes acting for a consortium of venture partners in preventing a $16 billion alliance between BP and Rosneft and representing an ultra-high-net-worth individual in a $380 million civil fraud claim.

Lynn Neuner, co-chair of Simpson Thacher’s litigation department, praised Edwards for his reputation in developing innovative strategies and delivering results for clients facing complex cross-border disputes. Edwards’ hire marks an important investment in the firm’s growing disputes team in London.

Edwards is the fifth partner to join Simpson Thacher’s London disputes team, where he will work alongside antitrust partners Antonio Bavasso, Ross Ferguson, and Étienne Renaudeau. His hire follows the firm’s recent additions in London, including funds partner Katie McMenamin from Travers Smith and private equity partner Angus Lennox from Blackstone.

Skadden thanked Edwards for his contributions and wished him the best in his new role at Simpson Thacher. The legal community in England and Wales continues to see movement among top firms, with former Director of Public Prosecutions Sir Max Hill KC recently joining King & Spalding’s London office as counsel.
