Playtech takes steps to resolve legal dispute with Caliplay in Mexico
Playtech, a leading provider of online gambling software, is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with Mexican online casino and sports betting brand Caliplay. The dispute has been ongoing for some time, with Caliplay recently launching legal proceedings to annul its partnership with Playtech.
Caliplay, a joint venture between Playtech and Mexico-facing operator Caliente, is seeking to end its legal relationship with Playtech, citing the impact on its regulated business in Mexico. The Mexican court has accepted jurisdiction over the claim, issuing interim orders that suspend certain rights held by Playtech under the agreements.
Despite the suspension of certain rights, Playtech has been ordered to continue providing software and services to Caliplay pending resolution of the claim. Playtech has responded by taking steps to protect its position and progress toward a resolution with Caliplay.
Playtech’s PT Services Malta business has secured interim anti-suit injunctions from the English courts against Caliplay, compelling Caliplay to stop taking further steps in the Mexican proceedings. Additionally, PT Services Malta has obtained separate interim measures from a Mexico court ordering Caliplay to discontinue the case it commenced in Mexico against Playtech entities.
Playtech emphasizes that Caliplay remains a highly important customer and is committed to resolving the dispute as quickly as possible. Playtech is taking steps to enforce its rights under the agreements with Caliplay and lift the interim measures obtained by Caliplay.
The dispute between Playtech and Caliplay originated from a disagreement over an option for Caliplay to redeem an additional services fee element of the strategic agreement. Playtech sought clarification from the English courts on whether the option had expired, while Caliplay claimed the option was still valid.
As the legal battle continues, Playtech remains determined to resolve the matter and maintain an open dialogue with Caliplay. Caliplay has yet to respond to Playtech’s latest statement on the ongoing dispute.
