Proposed Changes to the Irish Constitution: Referendum on Family and Women’s Roles

The Republic of Ireland is set to vote on changes to its constitution this week, with two referendums taking place on Friday, International Women’s Day. The focus of the referendums is on updating the definition of ‘family’ and the role of women within the family.

The first question on the ballot paper asks voters whether the constitutional definition of family should be expanded to include unmarried couples and single parent families, in addition to those founded on marriage. Supporters of this change, including Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, argue that it is necessary to recognize and support all types of families in modern society.

However, opponents of the change have raised concerns about the vague wording of the proposed amendment, particularly the term ‘durable relationship’. They fear that this lack of clarity could have unintended consequences in family courts, inheritance disputes, tax law, and immigration cases.

The second question on the ballot paper addresses the role of women within the family home. The current constitution states that mothers should not neglect their duties in the home, a provision that many view as outdated and sexist. Supporters of the change argue that this language has no place in modern Irish society and has led to discriminatory policies in the past.

On the other hand, opponents of the change, including disability activists, are concerned that the proposed amendment could shift the responsibility of care onto family members rather than the state. They argue that the wording of the amendment does not adequately protect the rights of disabled and older people, and could lead to a reduction in state-funded services.

Counting for the referendums is set to begin on Saturday, with a result expected by lunchtime. The outcome of these votes will have significant implications for the definition of family and the role of women in Irish society.
