Imran Khan’s adviser initiates legal action against Pakistan government after acid attack in UK

Legal Action Launched Against Pakistani Government Over Acid Attack on Former Advisor

The former senior adviser to Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, Shahzad Akbar, has launched a legal action against the Pakistani government, alleging that the feared intelligence agency, the ISI, was behind an acid attack on him at his home in Hertfordshire. The attack, which took place in front of his young daughter, left him with acid burns on his head and one arm, as well as permanent scars.

Akbar, who sought refuge in Britain after leading Pakistan’s anti-corruption efforts before Khan was ousted from power, claims that the ISI and Pakistan army officers were also responsible for an attempt to assassinate Khan in 2022 and the murder of investigative journalist Arshad Sharif. Sharif, who worked closely with Akbar, was shot dead in Kenya after fleeing Pakistan.

Akbar’s lawyers have accused the ISI of targeting those who campaign against corruption by politicians and government officials from abroad. They also highlighted the abduction of Akbar’s brother in Islamabad, with Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies denying any knowledge of his arrest until diplomatic pressure from Britain secured his release.

Despite facing threats and blackmail attempts, Akbar remains determined to seek justice through legal action. He has installed security systems at his home but acknowledges the risk he and his family still face. The Pakistan High Commission has denied any involvement in the attack, stating that it is not their policy to target their own nationals abroad.

The impact of the attack on Akbar and his family has been profound, with his daughter traumatized and his wife and children feeling isolated and stigmatized. Akbar hopes that his legal action will hold those responsible for the attack and other incidents to account.
