Contrasting UK Law and Bangladeshi Law: A Comparative Analysis

Comparing LLB (Hons) and UK Law Degrees in Bangladesh: A Comprehensive Analysis

Aspiring lawyers in Bangladesh face a crucial decision when it comes to choosing their educational pathway towards a legal career. The choice between obtaining a Bangladeshi LLB Honours (Hons) degree or opting for a UK qualifying law degree is not just about the curriculum but also about the costs, course length, content, and career prospects.

The LLB degrees offered at private institutions like North South University (NSU) and BRAC University focus on Bangladeshi law, while only a few institutions like London College of Legal Studies (LCLS) and Newcastle Law Academy (NLA) offer British law programs. The cost of an LLB (Hons) degree is generally cheaper than a UK law degree, which can amount to more than BDT 10 lakhs and may increase annually due to additional fees.

Personal preferences also play a role in decision-making, as some students, like recent UK LLB graduate Ayesha Binte Ashraf, choose UK law for a better understanding of the legal system’s foundation. The course length and content differ as well, with the LLB (Hons) degree taking 4 years compared to the 3-year British LLB program. Additionally, LLB (Hons) students may have to undertake additional courses like General Knowledge and Ethics.

Exam formats also vary, with LLB students giving online open-book exams while Bangladeshi LLB exams are mostly closed-book. Viva exams may also be required for LLB (Hons) students, providing a unique learning experience not found in the British LLB program. The overall experience of studying for the degree differs as well, with LLB (Hons) being taught in universities and British LLB being taught in teaching centres.

The primary difference between the two degrees lies in their purpose, with the British LLB offering a direct pathway to the Bar Training Course and a career as a barrister. However, for those not pursuing a career as a barrister, obtaining an LLB (Hons) degree may be a more cost-effective option.

In the end, the choice between a Bangladeshi LLB (Hons) degree and a UK qualifying law degree depends on individual preferences, career goals, and financial considerations. As final year LLB student Tamjidul Hoque reflects on his educational journey, the decision to pursue a legal career is not just about the degree but also about the experiences and opportunities that come with it.
