New Restrictions on XL Bully Dogs: What Owners Need to Know
The UK government has implemented new restrictions on XL Bully dogs, effective as of December 31st. These restrictions require all XL Bully dogs to be kept on a lead and muzzled in public, with additional measures such as banning breeding, selling, advertising, gifting, exchanging, abandoning, or letting XL Bully dogs stray.
The decision to impose these restrictions comes in response to a concerning increase in attacks by XL Bully dogs, resulting in the tragic deaths of 23 individuals in the past three years. XL Bullies have been involved in many of these fatal incidents.
Owners of XL Bully dogs are urged to register their pets before the February 1st deadline, as owning an unregistered XL Bully dog after this date will be considered a criminal offense, punishable by a criminal record and unlimited fines. Owners who no longer wish to keep their XL Bully dogs are advised to have them euthanized by a veterinarian.
Environment Secretary Steve Barclay emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the public from dog attacks, with measures in place to address the issue by the end of 2023. The government will continue to work closely with law enforcement, veterinary experts, and animal welfare groups to enforce these restrictions.
To assist owners in complying with the new regulations, leading animal welfare organizations have developed resources and training opportunities for muzzle training XL Bully dogs. Owners must also ensure their XL Bully dogs are registered, microchipped, and have active public liability insurance. Neutering requirements vary based on the age of the dog, with deadlines set for June and December 2024.
