Julian Assange Reunited with Family in Australia After Pleading Guilty to Spying Charge

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has made headlines once again as he touched down in his native Australia and was reunited with his family after pleading guilty to a spying charge as part of a plea deal with US authorities. Following his release from prison, Assange flew into the country’s capital Canberra on Wednesday, waving to photographers and supporters.

The 52-year-old appeared before a judge in the US territory of the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific, where he pleaded guilty to a single felony charge after the US dropped 17 other espionage charges against him. He admitted to his role in the conspiracy to violate the Espionage Act and was sentenced to time already served in a British prison.

Assange, wearing a dark-colored suit, did not answer questions from reporters on the short walk into and out of the court. His US lawyer, Barry Pollack, described his prosecution as “unprecedented” and stated that Assange had “suffered tremendously in his fight for free speech.”

The court hearing followed Assange’s dramatic release from Belmarsh Prison in London, where he had spent five years largely in solitary confinement, fighting extradition. Assange left the UK on a private jet after the plea deal was signed on June 19.

Assange’s imprisonment stemmed from the publication of hundreds of thousands of leaked documents relating to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, sparking legal battles that lasted 14 years.

Assange’s wife, Stella Assange, expressed her excitement for a “new chapter” following his release from prison. The couple had two children together during Assange’s time in self-imposed incarceration in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

The plea deal reached with US authorities allows Assange to avoid US custody and return to Australia. He is set to be reunited with his family in Canberra and has already paid for a chartered flight to bring him home.
