Chaotic Build-Up to Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final: Disqualifications, Withdrawals, and Protests

The Eurovision Song Contest, usually known for its carefree and kitschy celebration of European music, is facing a tumultuous build-up to Saturday’s grand final. The Dutch entry has been disqualified, another contestant has withdrawn from rehearsals, and a third broke rules by calling for peace on stage.

Adding to the chaos, two former contestants have pulled out of announcing the jury scores for their countries. The drama is unfolding against a backdrop of protests over Israel’s participation in the show, with thousands of pro-Palestinian marchers gathering in Malmö, Sweden, where the contest is being held.

Israel’s representative, Eden Golan, is under armed guard and confined to her hotel room when not on stage due to heightened security concerns. Several other competitors have expressed opposition to the Israel-Gaza war but have chosen to abide by Eurovision’s slogan, “united by music.”

French contestant Slimane made an impassioned plea for peace during the final dress rehearsal, potentially breaking Eurovision’s rules on political statements. Meanwhile, Irish contestant Bambie Thug withdrew from rehearsals after a complaint about coverage on Israeli television.

The Dutch contestant, Joost Klein, has been removed from the competition following an incident backstage, leading to allegations of intimidation. Norwegian and Finnish jury spokespersons have also pulled out, citing the “inflamed situation” in Malmö.

With tensions running high and political statements being made during the live broadcast, the EBU will be on high alert during the grand final, watched by over 160 million people worldwide. The controversies surrounding this year’s Eurovision have made it a challenging and politically charged event, unlike its usual lighthearted atmosphere.
