Workers Gain Legal Right to Request Predictable Working Patterns: Workers (Predictable Terms and Conditions) Bill Receives Royal Assent

The Workers (Predictable Terms and Conditions) Act 2023 has achieved Royal Assent, giving millions of workers the legal right to request a more predictable working pattern. This new law, supported by the Department for Business and Trade, aims to empower workers on atypical contracts, including those on zero hours contracts, to have more control over their working hours.

Business and Trade Minister Kevin Hollinrake emphasized the importance of ending the guessing game for workers who may have to put their lives on hold for uncertain shifts. The Act allows workers to formally request a more predictable working pattern, with employers required to respond within one month.

The new law is not only beneficial for workers but also for businesses, as it can lead to higher job satisfaction and better staff retention. Acas Chief Executive Susan Clews highlighted the importance of the new Code of Practice that will provide guidance on making and handling requests, encouraging constructive discussions between workers and employers.

This Act is part of a series of Private Member Bills supported by the government, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to worker’s rights. Other recent measures include support for employee parents, protection against redundancy for pregnant women and new parents, and greater flexibility for unpaid carers.

Overall, the Workers (Predictable Terms and Conditions) Act 2023 aims to create a more balanced and fair working environment, supporting both workers and businesses in the UK. With a focus on predictability and flexibility, this new law is set to benefit the economy and promote long-term growth.
