Master of the Rolls suggests that ‘Robot judges’ could take over from humans in resolving ‘minor’ court disputes

Robot Judges Powered by AI Technology Could Decide Court Cases in the Future, Says Senior Law Lord

The idea of robot judges powered by Artificial Intelligence making court rulings may seem like something out of a science fiction movie, but according to Master of the Rolls Sir Geoffrey Vos, it could become a reality in the future. Sir Geoffrey believes that AI programmes and machines could be used to decide low-level cases, freeing up human judges to focus on more complex matters.

Speaking at the Law and Technology Conference, Sir Geoffrey acknowledged the potential for AI to revolutionize the legal sector, but also emphasized the importance of maintaining human oversight, especially in cases involving children or serious offences. He highlighted the need for transparency in the decision-making process, with parties being informed whether a decision was made by a human judge or a machine, and the option of appealing to a human judge always available.

While the idea of robot judges may raise concerns for some, Sir Geoffrey believes that in certain types of disputes, such as commercial or compensation cases, parties may come to have confidence in machine-made decisions more quickly than expected. However, he stressed that there are limits to the use of AI in the judiciary, particularly in cases where intensely personal decisions are involved.

As technology continues to advance, the legal sector will need to adapt to ensure that the justice system remains fair and transparent. The prospect of robot judges may be a controversial one, but it could also offer new opportunities for efficiency and accessibility in the legal process.
