Law enforcement officers visit Scotland’s inaugural Bairns Hoose

Support for National Roll Out of Bairns Hoose Model to Protect Children in Scotland

The Lord Advocate and Solicitor General have shown their support for the Bairns Hoose model during a recent visit to North Strathclyde. The model, which provides a child-friendly and trauma-informed space for children who have experienced trauma, has been praised for its positive impact on children’s experiences and outcomes.

The Bairns Hoose, which opened in August 2023, has been instrumental in supporting children to share their stories and begin their recovery in a safe and supportive environment. The aim of the model is to ensure that children do not have to repeatedly recount their experiences to multiple professionals, reducing the risk of further harm or delay in receiving justice.

Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC emphasized the importance of understanding how the Bairns Hoose model operates in practice and how it can improve the lives of children impacted by crime. She highlighted the need for a collaborative approach between justice services, Children 1st, and local partners to ensure the highest standard of care and protection for children.

Mary Glasgow, chief executive of Children 1st, expressed her gratitude for the support from the law officers in advocating for the national roll-out of the Bairns Hoose concept. She emphasized the importance of providing every child in Scotland with access to a child-friendly and trauma-informed space when they need it most.

The visit to the Bairns Hoose highlighted the positive impact of the model on children’s lives and the ongoing commitment to improving systems of protection and justice for vulnerable children. With the support of key stakeholders, including the Lord Advocate and Solicitor General, the Bairns Hoose model is set to make a significant difference in the lives of children across Scotland.
