Applying for Probate Online: A Simpler and More Efficient Service for the Bereaved

This new online probate service in England and Wales is set to make the process of dealing with a bereavement much simpler and more efficient. The service allows people to apply, pay, and swear a statement of truth online, eliminating the need for a visit to a probate registry or solicitor’s office for most individuals.

The Chief Executive of HMCTS, Susan Acland-Hood, highlighted the importance of making probate more convenient for those going through a challenging time. The service has already been successfully trialled and received positive feedback from users, with 93% reporting satisfaction with the service.

One user, Tony Donoghue, praised the online system for its ease of use and efficiency. He was able to receive the grant of probate within a week of submitting his application, showcasing the speed and effectiveness of the new service.

HMCTS plans to add more features to the online probate service in the future, including the ability to apply if the deceased did not leave a will. Feedback is encouraged to ensure continuous improvements are made.

This online probate service is part of HMCTS’s larger £1bn programme of court reform, which aims to bring new technology and modern ways of working to the justice system. Other successful initiatives under this programme include an online small money claims service and a system for applying for divorce online.

For those who may struggle to use the online service, face-to-face support is available through The Good Things Foundation. The paper form option is still available for those who prefer it, and has also been simplified for ease of use.
