Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron Reveals Ongoing Dispute with Chris Cornell’s Estate

Soundgarden’s drummer, Matt Cameron, has revealed that the band’s dispute with Chris Cornell’s estate is still ongoing, despite earlier reports of a settlement. Earlier this year, the band and Cornell’s widow, Vicky, announced that they had reached an amicable resolution and would be releasing the band’s final recordings.

However, during an appearance on The Vinyl Guide podcast, Cameron disclosed that the band is still in the midst of a legal battle with Cornell’s estate, casting doubt on the release of the final songs featuring the late frontman. “We’re still in the middle of a dispute with the estate,” Cameron said. “Everything is on hold right now. As of right now, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen next year. Hopefully soon. I’m not giving up hope.”

At the heart of the dispute are a handful of unreleased songs that Vicky Cornell claims were not explicitly written for Soundgarden. The band argues that the majority of the material in question originated from group writing and recording sessions dating back to 2015.

Chris Cornell tragically died by suicide on May 18, 2017, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest songwriters and vocalists of all time. Last year, tributes were paid to Cornell by Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, and Vicky Cornell to mark the fifth anniversary of his passing.

Vicky Cornell also confirmed plans for a second volume of covers recorded by Chris before his death. The upcoming collection, which was mastered by the late singer but not yet sequenced, is set for release in the future.

As fans eagerly await the release of the final recordings from Soundgarden, the ongoing legal dispute adds a layer of complexity to the band’s legacy and the preservation of Chris Cornell’s musical contributions.
